Catherine Wheel were an alternative rock band which formed in 1990 in Great Yarmouth, England. The band originally consisted of Rob Dickinson (vocals, guitar), Brian Futter (guitar), Dave Hawes (bass), and Neil Sims (drums). Hawes left the band in 1999 and was replaced by Ben Ellis. Around the time of Hawes' departure, the band changed their name to "The Catherine Wheel". The band split only a year later, in 2000.
By using their influences as a mere launching pad and consistently developing their many strengths, Catherine Wheel was able to outlast all of their early peers. With their initial singles and first album, the band from East Anglia fit snugly with the remainder of bands that the British press eventually labeled as shoegazers. However, the always tuneful Catherine Wheel survived by refusing to repeat themselves and remaining accessible to their constantly swelling fanbase through touring like dogs.
